“Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?” Sir David Attenborough
The Karoo region boasts a remarkable diversity of birdlife, and Jansenville, according to Avibase, the world bird database, is home to an impressive 316 bird species. Millwood Farm, situated a mere 24 kilometers from Jansenville in a straight line, is no exception to this avian haven.
It's truly astonishing to witness the multitude of bird species that have chosen to call this semi-desert area their home. In April 2019, we had the immense pleasure of hosting the BirdLife Eastern Cape (BLEC) group for a weekend at Millwood Manor. During their stay, they had the privilege of identifying an astounding 98 different bird species in just two days on the farm.
Since then, numerous dedicated birdwatchers have added more species to this growing list. We've been particularly fortunate to have some special avian residents right in our garden at home, including a charming Scops owl and a pair of Gabar Goshawks nestled among the trees.
For bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, we invite you to peruse our printable list of birds and, even better, contribute to it by sharing your own sightings and photographs on our Facebook page. Together, we can continue to celebrate the rich tapestry of birdlife that graces Millwood Farm and the Karoo region.
